▲ Jang Gano Solo Exhibition 'Allwonderingscomeataprice' = Gallery ERD Busan presents the solo exhibition 'Allwonderingscomeataprice' by artist Jang Gano.
This solo exhibition explores the artist's unique abstract world by visualizing and constructing the process of various wanderings and concerns that began during the transition of materials, through the flow of the artist's early and recent works.
The artist works concurrently on subculture-based illustrations and paintings, researching how to express the shapes imagined and created by himself in a way that conveys a sense of existence. Initially, he focused on the basic aspects of figures, working mainly with 'line' drawings, continuing solid and dense work. However, he encountered limitations in the processes of contrast between light and shadow and the transition between two-dimensional and three-dimensional expressions to achieve a more three-dimensional effect.
Subsequently, to impart three-dimensionality to the images he wanted to express, the artist introduced a method of generating spatial information in the background of figures in a grid form, implementing a complementary effect among elements. This expression enhances the realistic presence of characters in the paintings and reveals dimensional depth and spatial sense in the works. The exhibition offers an experience of the world of characters imbued with the artist's intention and imagination through a combination of various visual elements, presenting the virtual world within the artworks to the audience. The exhibition runs until the 30th at Gallery ERD Busan, Haeundaehaebyeon-ro, Haeundae, Busan.
▲ Kim Ji-hye Solo Exhibition 'BETWEEN THE LINES' = LG Uplus Gallery C hosts the exhibition 'BETWEEN THE LINES' by artist Kim Ji-hye. In the rapidly changing digital era where even questions about the essential value and authenticity of images are diluted, the artist expresses a paradise or direction we can move toward by presenting spaces unseen in reality amidst distortions and variations.
On Sunday mornings, when the city's most raw aspects are revealed, the artist takes a camera and sets out. Collecting fleeting moments within the city, she considers pixels in photographs as particles of paint, mixing colors and drawing to piece together heterogeneous fragments. Within this, she expresses the complex relationships of city dwellers through numerous layers, compressing them to create exotic spaces. Instead of a brush, the artist uses a computer mouse to build a painterly world from photographs. The lines in her works reveal the city's expressions with fluid geometric arrangements, sometimes lively, sometimes tense.
The artist's works capture our presence in various cities, from Garosugil in Seoul and rooftops in Seochon to the exotic streets of London. Even on quiet streets lined only with closed shops, she captures the footsteps of tourists excited simply by the unfamiliar city, or creates spaces expressing imagination and joy of people on the streets by utilizing the colors of signs and shop windows.
The exhibition title 'BETWEEN THE LINES' reflects the artist's contemplation inspired by the idiom 'Read Between The Lines.' The lines marking boundaries affirm reality's existence and reflect on life's meaning, serving as devices not to intend specific shapes. In the frame, each object, space, and individual retains its presence, finding new connections beyond existing contexts and moving to entirely different times and spaces, unfolding another space of creation for us. The exhibition runs until September 1st at LG Uplus Gallery C, Magokjungang 8-ro, Gangseo-gu, Seoul.
▲ '-NESS' Exhibition = Rahin Gallery presents the exhibition '-NESS' featuring artists Goyoson and Kim Sangso. The exhibition is planned to contemplate the various aesthetic conditions that construct contemporary art from the perspectives of creators, viewers, and appreciators, both separately and together. It aims to subjectivize the highly advanced conditions of contemporary art, which are taken for granted, through objectification.
The exhibition enumerates the criteria and conditions that establish the category of art and projects specific purposes onto them, sometimes creating cracks in the contemporary art system considered taboo or impossible. However, these cracks are not intended to overthrow anything unconditionally but to dismantle the principles of self-constitution and gauge directions for appropriate aesthetic innovation.
As a response to the fundamental concepts proposed at the planning level, Goyoson and Kim Sangso conceive their works separately and together, taking the material nature of sculpture and painting they mainly handle as one vector, and the artistic qualities ranging from commerciality to purity as another vector.
Jang Jintaek, an independent curator who planned the exhibition, explains, "This exhibition reminds us that the nature of something is always formed through specific amplification or attenuation effects surrounding it, and encourages the subjects of creation and appreciation in today's art to seek possibilities for appropriate practice." The exhibition runs until the 29th at Rahin Gallery, 20-gil Hangang-daero, Yongsan-gu, Seoul.
