The think tank of Seongnam City, Gyeonggi Province, 'City Administration Research Institute,' opened on the 3rd.
Seongnam City announced that it opened the City Administration Research Institute on the first floor of the Seongnam Global Convergence Center within Pangyo 2nd Techno Valley, Siheung-dong, Sujeong-gu, covering an area of 509㎡.
The City Administration Research Institute will design the future of Seongnam and play a role in discovering policies and large-scale projects to support it. Notably, among cities with a population of over 500,000, Seongnam is the first to open such an institute.
Seongnam City previously conducted an open recruitment for 24 professional personnel, including the director, master's and doctoral researchers, and administrative staff. The organization consists of one Planning Support Office and four departments: Administration Education, 4th Industry, Culture and Welfare, and Urban Environment Research.
The projects by field include ▲research on major policies and current issues ▲establishment of mid- to long-term city roadmaps ▲proactive planning research responding to future demands ▲operation of academic events and external cooperation exchanges ▲building domestic and international cooperative governance and networks ▲establishment of integrated research and management information systems.
The City Administration Research Institute could only be established in cities with populations over one million, but the establishment criteria were relaxed to cities with populations over 500,000 following the revision of the Local Research Institute Act in April last year.
Accordingly, Seongnam City included it as a core pledge project of the 8th local government, conducted its own feasibility review for the establishment of the City Administration Research Institute in October last year, and enacted the 'Ordinance on the Establishment and Operation of the City Administration Research Institute' on December 19. The preparation and endowment funds amount to 3.46 billion KRW.
Shin Sang-jin, mayor of Seongnam City, said, "Please serve as the brain designing Seongnam's future," adding, "We expect that customized policy research reflecting the city's identity and vision will strengthen urban competitiveness and improve the quality of life for citizens."
