On the 17th at around 5:40 PM, a fire broke out in an apartment in Jeongja-dong, Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do. Two casualties were reported from the unit where the fire occurred.
The fire started in a unit on the 2nd floor of a 15-story building. Fire authorities found a man in his 40s, Mr. A, in a state of suffocation in the bathroom of the 2nd-floor unit. They then recovered the body of Mr. B, found deceased in the master bedroom. Mr. B was confirmed to be Mr. A's son. Mr. A is currently being transported to a hospital for treatment.
It is presumed that they were unable to evacuate in time due to the fire inside the home. As the flames surged during the fire, residents in the same building evacuated urgently. It is reported that over 70 related emergency calls were received from witnesses of the fire.
The police and fire authorities are investigating the detailed cause of the fire. The building where the fire occurred is a 15-story structure housing 60 units. At the time of the fire, the alarm system and indoor fire hydrants were reported to be functioning normally.
