The Kakao Carbon Index is a metric developed to embody Kakao's commitment to actively addressing environmental issues. It quantifies various eco-friendly contribution activities that users participate in through Kakao's services and platforms, such as the travel distances of KakaoT electric taxis and T Bike, bicycle riding distances on KakaoMap, the number of electronic documents and electronic bills converted via KakaoPay and KakaoTalk Wallet, and upcycling through Kakao Makers' Saegabeotchi. The unit of measurement is KUC (Kakao Users’ Carbon-reduction). In 2022, users’ contributions to greenhouse gas reduction and social indirect value totaled 63 million KUC, which is equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of approximately 400,000 pine trees.

Kakao plans to further enhance the Carbon Index by collecting and analyzing various data generated from users’ eco-friendly service usage, purchases, and activities. Alongside this, the company is considering establishing an environmental fund proportional to the aggregated Carbon Index and providing rewards to individual users based on their eco-friendly activities.

Yook Sim-na, Head of Kakao’s ESG Business, stated, "We aim to continuously propose eco-friendly activities that Kakao’s service and platform users can participate in daily, fostering a social atmosphere that actively engages in solving the climate crisis and environmental issues."
