Negative Reactions from Many Netizens to Prospective Groom's Opinion
Netizens Say, "Think About What a Honeymoon Really Means"
Honeymoon Costs Rise Approximately 28% Compared to Last Year
A story about a groom-to-be who wants to take his mother along on his honeymoon has sparked controversy among netizens after being posted on an online community.
On the 25th, an anonymous office worker community called 'Blind' featured a post titled, "Should I ask my girlfriend if we can take my mom with us on our honeymoon?" The author, Mr. A, revealed, "My girlfriend and I are preparing for our wedding, and we've decided to go to Switzerland for our honeymoon."

Mr. A wrote, "But when planning to go to Switzerland, I remembered my mom once saying while watching TV, 'I want to visit Switzerland at least once before I die.' Actually, my dad passed away in a car accident when I was in elementary school, so my mom raised me alone, supporting me until I graduated from college and became a public servant. She went through a lot."
He continued, "(My mom) has been working every day and hasn't been able to travel properly," adding, "She's getting older, and since she can't take long vacations except for the honeymoon, this trip will probably be her first and last overseas trip."
Mr. A asked for advice, saying, "Should I ask my girlfriend for some understanding and suggest that my mom come along on our honeymoon? I think it would be good for my girlfriend and mom to travel together, get closer, and it might even prevent future mother-in-law and daughter-in-law conflicts."

However, many netizens responded negatively to Mr. A's story. Comments included, "Why not take your mother-in-law too?", "Just imagining it makes me uncomfortable. If you said that before marriage, I'd want to cancel everything," "If you try to show filial piety like this, I can already see how your married life will go," and "I hope this story is fabricated."
In response to the negative comments, Mr. A expressed frustration, saying, "My mother has no one to travel with. Everyone around her has had a hard life," and "It's hard to take long vacations like a honeymoon, and we can't afford to go twice. Since we're going anyway, it would be nice to go with my mom without spending extra time, but there are too many malicious comments."
He added in a reply, "There are many hateful comments because I want to take only my mom. Then if I said we should take both sets of parents on our honeymoon, wouldn't my girlfriend like that?"
Some netizens responded to this comment by drawing a line, saying, "Think about what a honeymoon really means," and "Why try to show filial piety through a honeymoon? These should be considered separately."

Meanwhile, since the lifting of social distancing measures, the pent-up demand for honeymoons has exploded this year.
According to a survey conducted by the marriage information company Duo in February, involving 1,000 newlywed couples (500 men and 500 women) married within the last two years, the average honeymoon cost was 4.95 million KRW.
During the same period, an Interpark survey showed that reservations for honeymoon package products increased by 1604% (17 times) compared to the previous year.
This is analyzed to be influenced by the added travel demand from young couples who had postponed their honeymoons due to COVID-19. The most popular honeymoon destination was Bali, the volcanic island in Indonesia, accounting for 22%. It was followed by the Maldives (20%), Thailand (Phuket and Koh Samui) (16%), Hawaii (14%), and Europe (11%).
