The Seo-gu Council of Gwangju Metropolitan City is continuing its efforts to carry on the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Movement on the 43rd anniversary of the movement.
According to the Seo-gu Council on the 22nd, the council members recently watched the musical "Gwangju" following a special lecture on the May 18 Democratic Movement held last month.
This production was created in 2020 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Movement and is currently in its fourth season.
Centered around the symbol of the democratization movement, the song "March for the Beloved," it is inspired by the true stories of the activists who cultivated Gwangju as a land of peace, depicting the struggle of ordinary citizens at the time to protect their everyday lives.
Before the performance began, the Seo-gu council members participated in a relay singing of "March for the Beloved" at Bitgoeul Culture Square, adding significance to the inheritance of the spirit of the democratization movement.
Chairperson Ko Kyung-ae said, "As a citizen of Gwangju, it was a precious experience to encounter the May 18 Democratic Movement through the musical and reflect on its meaning. I am grateful for the dedication of all those who were present at the democratization movement site at that time, and thanks to them, we are who we are today."
She added, "The Seo-gu Council will always keep the spirit of May 18 in our hearts and dedicate ourselves to democratic council activities."
