iPhone Dropped from 4km Altitude... "Unrealistic but Fully Functional"

Extreme Testing of Smartphones Draws Attention
Galaxy S22 Remains Intact Even After Being Run Over by a Truck

A YouTube video of an overseas skydiver dropping an iPhone from an altitude of 14,000 feet (about 4 km) is gaining attention. Contrary to expectations, the phone was shown to operate perfectly even after hitting the ground, making it even more of a sensation.

Famous skydiver Hatton Smith conducted a unique experiment last February. He jumped from an altitude of 14,000 feet while carrying his Apple iPhone. The video has garnered over 1.3 million views, attracting the interest of many netizens.

In the video, as soon as Smith jumps out of the aircraft, the iPhone in his pocket slips out. Shortly after, Smith retrieves the iPhone, which is deeply embedded in the muddy ground.

Amazingly, the iPhone's exterior is intact, and it even appears to be functioning well. Smith himself expressed amazement, saying it was like "Excalibur" and "unreal."

Regarding this, Apple-related IT media outlet 'Apple Insider' explained on the 6th (local time), "It is unknown which iPhone model was used in the experiment, but the case looks quite sturdy," adding, "The reason the iPhone survived unusually well is likely because it landed softly on the muddy ground."

Spilled Food, Run Over by Truck... Smartphones as a Marketing Tool Through 'Extreme Tests'

Today, smartphones undergo rigorous durability tests during manufacturing. Experiments include repeatedly dropping them on the ground or pressing heavy objects on top of them.

Manufacturers also showcase their products' durability as a marketing tool. For example, Apple released a creative advertisement in 2021 using the iPhone as a 'cooking ingredient.'

In this video, a foreign man repeatedly drops an iPhone 12 onto a cutting board, spills other food items such as pepper and egg yolk on it, rolls it with a rolling pin, and taps it with a kitchen knife. While it seems humorous, the video actually promotes the durability and waterproof features of the iPhone case.

Content known as 'extreme durability tests' has also been created to find out how much impact smartphones can withstand. YouTubers conducting extreme tests crush smartphones under car tires or even burn them to see how well they function afterward.

Last February, an IT YouTuber conducted an experiment where a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was run over by a large truck tire. At that time, the S22 Ultra only had minor scratches, the display was not broken, and it continued to function normally.
