Prime Minister Han Duck-soo emphasized on the 27th, "We will first expand basic learning support programs before and after school enrollment to close the academic achievement gap among multicultural youth."
At the 21st Multicultural Policy Committee held at the Government Seoul Office in Jongno-gu, Seoul, Prime Minister Han stated, "The number of multicultural students has increased to 170,000, but their school adaptation is declining, and the university entrance rate is 40.5%, which is about 57% compared to the overall youth university entrance rate of 71.5%."
He continued, "For school-age children, we will strengthen Korean language education through 230 family centers and 527 Korean language classes," adding, "For middle and high school students, we will support career guidance through career consulting, university student mentoring, and vocational training services."
Regarding marriage and immigration support, he said, "During the initial adaptation period, we will focus on providing interpretation and translation, multilingual counseling, and Korean language education, and for families who have settled long-term, we will offer programs to enhance family relationships, ensure safety in daily life, and prepare for old age," further stating, "We will provide legal and administrative services to prevent difficulties related to residency issues, children's education, and employment."
Prime Minister Han also mentioned, "To leverage the strengths and capabilities of multicultural families, we will operate bilingual classrooms and register outstanding individuals in a talent database to be utilized appropriately," and added, "We will also examine elements of racial and cultural discrimination throughout society to ensure that diversity is respected."
