Yu Sang-young, CEO of SK Telecom, described the competition among mobile carriers for 5G mid-tier plans as "desirable."
On the 19th, Yu made these remarks during a meeting with reporters at the World IT Show 2023, the largest domestic information and communication technology (ICT) exhibition held at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
SKT will launch four types of 5G mid-tier plans next month, offering monthly basic data allowances of 37GB (62,000 KRW), 54GB (64,000 KRW), 74GB (66,000 KRW), and 99GB (68,000 KRW). LG Uplus has also introduced corresponding 5G mid-tier plans, and KT is expected to announce its mid-tier plans soon.
However, civic groups have pointed out the need for lower-priced plans below the current data tiers. LG Uplus has stated that it is considering launching such plans in the second half of the year. Yu said, "There are currently no plans to launch low-cost 5G plans."
SK Telecom has recently changed its stance on the MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) market by establishing a dedicated MVNO sales team. Previously, in 2021, SK Telecom announced during a National Assembly audit that it would withdraw its subsidiary from the MVNO market following decisions by the National Assembly and government. Regarding this, Yu only responded, "MVNO customers are also customers using our network."
Yu also mentioned that regarding the 5G 28 GHz frequency band, which expires next month, "We are in various consultations with the government."
