Collaboration Research Promotion with Wave Energy Extreme Control Research Group
Global defense company LIG Nex1 is pouring efforts into a research project on ‘metamaterials,’ a next-generation core defense technology.
LIG Nex1 (CEO Kim Ji-chan) and the Wave Energy Extreme Control Research Group (Director Lee Hak-joo) have decided to conduct joint research on metamaterials, which are considered key technologies leading major industries such as stealth and sensors, to secure next-generation defense R&D capabilities.
On the 10th, LIG Nex1 announced on the 13th that it signed an MOU for the establishment of the ‘Defense Metastructure Joint Research Center’ at the Wave Energy Extreme Control Research Group in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon.
The signing ceremony was attended by key officials including Kim Gun-young, Head of R&D Division 1 of C4ISTAR at LIG Nex1, Jeong Moon-seop, Research Fellow of the C4ISTAR Business Division, Yoo Gu-hyun, Director of the C4ISTAR Mechanical Convergence Research Institute, Lee Hak-joo, Director of the Wave Energy Extreme Control Research Group, and Research Fellow Choi Tae-in.
The two organizations will establish the ‘Defense Metastructure Joint Research Center’ to jointly participate in research and development of core defense science technologies and system projects in various fields such as stealth and sensors.
They plan to carry out mutual cooperation including specialized technical education and seminars related to metamaterials.
In advanced countries such as the United States and Europe, research on weapon systems utilizing metamaterials is actively underway, and recently, research and commercialization of metamaterials have been progressing in the civilian sector domestically; however, research for system application in the defense sector is still needed.
Through this agreement, LIG Nex1 and the Wave Energy Extreme Control Research Group are expected to lead the development of metamaterial technology in the defense R&D field and apply it on-site, heralding an era of advanced defense industries such as aerospace and ultrasound.
Lee Hak-joo, Director of the Wave Energy Extreme Control Research Group, said, “Through research cooperation with LIG Nex1, the Wave Energy Extreme Control Research Group has gained the opportunity to apply the design and manufacturing technologies in the metamaterial field, which we possess as part of the Global Frontier project, to the defense industry.”
Shin Ik-hyun, Head of the C4ISTAR Business Division at LIG Nex1, emphasized, “With the signing of this agreement, we have an opportunity to strategically plan and prepare for the application of metamaterials in the defense sector.”
He added, “We will secure next-generation core defense technologies by effectively combining LIG Nex1’s development experience accumulated across all defense projects with the advanced technological capabilities of the Wave Energy Extreme Control Research Group.”
