Gwangyang Hope Library Operates 'Coding with Stories' Program

Conducting an Integrated Program Combining Reading and Coding

Gwangyang Hope Library in Jeonnam has been selected for the second consecutive year as an operating institution for the 「2023 Coding with Stories」 contest project promoted by the National Library for Children and Young Adults.

‘Coding with Stories’ is a convergence program designed to keep pace with the 4th Industrial Revolution era. It combines reading with coding to stimulate children's interest in reading and help improve their computational thinking skills.

The program consists of a total of four sessions, where participants read themed books with a librarian, write individual coding scenarios, and then engage in coding practice and making activities led by a professional coding instructor.

In June, students in grades 4 to 6 at elementary schools in Gwangyang City will be recruited, and the program will be held over four sessions every Saturday throughout July.

Kim Hyun-sook, team leader of Hope Library, said, “Through this unique program linking books and coding, we hope children discover new joys in reading and develop their logical thinking and creativity. We will actively strive to bridge the digital education gap for children and nurture creative talents in line with the digital transformation era.”

Meanwhile, Gwangyang Hope Library has designated ‘Children’s Future Education’ as its specialized theme to enhance local children’s digital capabilities, and is promoting initiatives such as setting up themed book corners and providing AI and software program education.
