'Burning Trotman' Winner Candidate... Shanghai Battle History & 'Iljin' Rumors
"Please Give Me a Chance to Change into a Better Person" Plea
Hwang Young-woong, a contestant on MBN's 'Burning Trotman' who recently sparked controversy over assault allegations, has issued an apology.
In a statement released on the 25th, Hwang Young-woong expressed, "I deeply apologize to many people who have been harmed due to my shortcomings and mistakes." He continued, "During the broadcast recordings, I was in fear and pain every moment," and confessed, "Even now, at this moment, I want to let go of everything and disappear."
Regarding the victim he assaulted, he said, "I am truly sorry for hurting a friend I was close to," and added, "I will meet them in person to convey my apology and ask for forgiveness."
However, it appears there will be no suspension or resignation. He stated, "I gather the courage to publicly apologize thinking of my mother, who has lived supporting her unworthy son all her life, and my grandmother who took care of me on behalf of my mother," and requested, "Please give me a chance to reflect on my past and live as a better person."
'Burning Trotman' is a program that selects the best trot singer through a survival competition, and Hwang Young-woong was considered a strong favorite to win. He ranked first in the nationwide vote immediately after the first broadcast on December 20 last year, and continued his momentum by placing first in the recent semifinals.
However, he recently became the center of controversy following a revelation by a YouTuber. The YouTuber claimed, "Hwang Young-woong has a record of assault," and relayed the words of Mr. A, who alleges he was assaulted by Hwang Young-woong. Mr. A claimed that during a birthday party with friends, a verbal altercation broke out with Hwang Young-woong, who then assaulted him unilaterally by punching and kicking his fallen face. Afterwards, Mr. A filed a complaint against Hwang Young-woong, but the latter counter-sued for mutual assault, and the case was reportedly settled with a 3 million won agreement covering medical expenses.
The production team of 'Burning Trotman' also apologized to viewers through an official statement. They said, "Although there were prior checks and pledges in selecting contestants, we regret that an unfortunate situation occurred due to practical limitations, and we apologize to viewers and fans."
The finals of 'Burning Trotman,' featuring the top 8 contestants, have already been recorded, with only the viewer text voting and winner announcement to be broadcast live. The finals are scheduled to air on the 28th of this month and the 7th of next month.
