Under the "Awkward Romanticism," the Master and Five Disciples Gathered

Nuke Gallery, Awkward Romanticism Exhibition
Questioning How to View Contemporary Abstraction

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] "In a confusing and anxious world with an unreliable past and a future shrouded in fog, we are navigating by soothing our faith with awkward romanticism. Courage seems to be more necessary for artists of this era."

Nook Gallery announced on the 9th that it will hold a group exhibition titled "Tentative Romanticism," featuring artist Seol Won-gi and five of his disciples and fellow artists, from the 17th of this month until March 10th.

This exhibition raises questions about how to view abstraction in the current era, where not only the formal standards but also the perspectives on artworks have changed, through six artists who work with determination while contemplating abstract art. It is the seventh annual exhibition by Nook Gallery featuring a master and his disciples as the first show of the year.

Ahead of the exhibition, the artist focuses on the meaning of "being a source of strength step by step in a reality where the weight of despair is felt." Regarding the exhibition theme, Tentative Romanticism, he explains, "Meaning is like faith, and faith gives hope. Hope is romanticism, and perhaps romanticism is a dream."

Seol Won-gi (72) graduated from Duksung Women's University and taught students as a professor at Korea National University of Arts (KNUA) from 1998 to 2016. He has held over 20 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions.
