Makoto Shinkai's 'Suzume no Tojimari' Surpasses 10 Million in Japan

Director Makoto Shinkai's film Suzume no Tojimari has surpassed 10 million viewers in Japan, the distributor Media Castle announced on the 6th.


Suzume no Tojimari tells the story of a girl who accidentally opens a door that brings disasters and desperately closes doors to prevent disasters occurring across Japan. The film was invited to compete at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival.

Director Makoto Shinkai has achieved three consecutive films with over 10 million viewers, following Your Name. and Weathering with You. His film Your Name. (2016) ranked number one at the Japanese box office for 12 consecutive weeks, attracting 19.28 million viewers and earning 25.17 billion yen (approximately 238.39 billion KRW), gaining significant attention. This is the second highest revenue after Spirited Away. Later, Weathering with You (2019) drew 10.63 million viewers, earning 14.23 billion yen (approximately 134.78 billion KRW), marking consecutive films with over 10 million viewers.


The new work Suzume no Tojimari, released after three years, opened in Japan on November 11 last year, attracting 1.33 million viewers, the highest opening score for a Makoto Shinkai film, and steadily drew audiences for three months. In Japan, it surpassed 13.3 billion yen (approximately 125.97 billion KRW) in revenue and reached 10,001,778 viewers as of the 3rd. The film is scheduled to be released domestically on March 8.
