"Do Not Hold Positions in Candidate Camps," Says Party Lawmakers
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] Jeong Jin-seok, Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, urged, "I hope that not only the candidates for party leader but also our party members refrain from using the terms 'pro-Yoon' and 'anti-Yoon' going forward."
On the 15th, Chairman Jeong stated this through Facebook, saying, "As the person responsible for managing the People Power Party's convention, I have a few requests."
He said, "How long has it been since President Yoon Seok-yeol started his political career? How can there be factions called 'pro-Yoon Seok-yeol' and 'anti-Yoon Seok-yeol'?" He added, "All of our lawmakers and party district chiefs who worked hard for President Yoon's election are 'pro-Yoon'."
He recalled that during the 2007 party presidential candidate primaries, he identified himself as 'pro-Lee (pro-Lee Myung-bak faction)' and 'pro-Park (pro-Park Geun-hye faction)' but insisted these were not political factions. Chairman Jeong said, "I claimed to be 'pro-Lee' and 'pro-Park' with the intention of getting nominations more easily, and that became the spark that ruined two administrations."
He also requested that current People Power Party lawmakers refrain from holding positions in party leader candidate campaigns. Chairman Jeong said, "The fate of our camp depends on the outcome of the next general election," and criticized, "The term 'party leadership' itself is an outdated political term from an old era."
He said, "Right now, the National Assembly is a battlefield due to the Democratic Party's 'Lee Jae-myung shield,'" and added, "The place where our party lawmakers should focus their capabilities is the National Assembly, not the convention arena."
He further advised, "Do not use this convention as an opportunity to attack the president or tarnish our party." He also stated that the party and the election commission would immediately impose sanctions on such individuals.
He said, "Our party members will no longer tolerate those who deliberately involve the president to belittle him, disparage our party, gain cheers from the opposing camp, and insist that this is popular support."
