[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] The fire that occurred in the soundproof tunnel on the 2nd Gyeongin Expressway in Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi Province, is believed to have started from a waste grab truck that was in operation.
According to the Gyeonggi-do Fire and Disaster Headquarters, at 1:49 PM on the day, an unknown fire broke out in a waste grab truck passing through the Galhyeon Overpass soundproof tunnel on the Seongnam-bound side of the 2nd Gyeongin Expressway in Gwacheon-si.
A fire official said at the on-site briefing that more verification is needed regarding questions about whether a collision accident occurred.
The fire resulted in 5 deaths. 37 people were injured, with 3 in serious condition. A total of 45 vehicles were destroyed. It is reported that the deceased were found in 4 passenger cars, with 1 to 2 people in each vehicle.
The fire authorities plan to investigate the exact cause of the fire as soon as the search and rescue operation is completed.
