[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The modernization project of the Seunggi Sewage Treatment Plant in Incheon, which had been temporarily suspended, has regained momentum following the Ministry of Environment's approval of the related plan and the decision to secure additional national funding.
The city announced on the 4th that the "2035 Incheon Metropolitan City Sewerage Maintenance Basic Plan Partial Amendment (Seunggi Sewage Treatment Area)" has received approval from the Ministry of Environment.
While conducting feasibility studies, establishing the basic plan, and preparing the bidding guidelines for the Seunggi Sewage Treatment Plant modernization project, the city temporarily halted the project in July to reflect the sewage volume (20,000 tons/day) from the "Guwol 2 Public Housing District Development Project" and applied to the Ministry of Environment for a partial amendment of the sewerage maintenance basic plan.
Additionally, through consultations with the Ministry of Environment, the city secured an increase in national funding support from the initial 15.5 billion KRW to 45.5 billion KRW.
Accordingly, with an investment of 388.4 billion KRW from national and city funds, the city plans to fully underground the water treatment facilities of the Seunggi Sewage Treatment Plant and install convenience facilities for residents above ground as part of the modernization (reconstruction) project.
The main construction is scheduled to begin in 2025, aiming for completion in the first half of 2030. The existing sewage treatment facilities will continue to operate during the construction period.
The Seunggi Sewage Treatment Plant, which serves parts of Yeonsu-gu, Michuhol-gu, and Namdong-gu in Incheon, has been operating without major facility improvements other than advanced treatment upgrades in 2007 since its completion in 1995.
High-concentration industrial wastewater is generated in the Namdong Industrial Complex located within the treatment area, and the area with dedicated sewage pipelines has expanded in Yeonsu-gu and Namdong-gu. Due to the aging existing facilities, it has become difficult to completely treat the increasing pollutants.
Through this project, the city plans to include the Guwol 2 District public housing development area in the treatment coverage, increasing the capacity of the Seunggi Sewage Treatment Plant from 250,000 tons per day to 270,000 tons per day, an increase of 20,000 tons.
An official from Incheon City stated, "The modernization project of the Seunggi Sewage Treatment Plant is expected to contribute to creating a pleasant living environment for citizens and to the stable preservation of water quality in public water areas."
