[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Suwon Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market completed a five-year facility modernization project and held an opening ceremony on the 22nd.
Suwon City announced on the 23rd that it started the first phase of construction in November 2017 by building two temporary stores for vegetable shops, followed by the second phase in September 2020 with the new construction and relocation of the fruit and seafood buildings, and completed the third phase in April this year with the new construction and relocation of the vegetable building. Recently, all stores have moved in.
The Suwon Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market was developed on a site area of 56,168㎡, with a total building floor area of 50,852㎡, consisting of six buildings.
The basement level 1 includes parking facilities and a cold distribution system. The ground floor houses the fruit building, seafood building, vegetable buildings (1 and 2), onion auction hall, and management building. The second floor contains the management office, and the third floor has a lounge and visitor convenience facilities.
Suwon City carried out the facility modernization project in three phases using a 'step-by-step circular development method' to ensure the wholesale market could operate normally during construction.
Since its opening in February 1993, the Suwon Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market has served as a hub for agricultural and marine product distribution in the southwestern Gyeonggi region. However, from the mid-2000s, it faced difficulties such as a decline in users due to aging facilities.
In response, it applied for and was selected in the 'Facility Modernization Contest' hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in 2013, and began the facility modernization project with national funding support.
The opening ceremony was attended by Suwon Mayor Lee Jae-jun, Suwon City Council Chairman Kim Ki-jung, Vice Chairman Lee Jae-sik, and others.
Mayor Lee Jae-jun expressed his gratitude to the merchants for enduring inconveniences during the modernization project and said, "Building on the facility modernization project, the Suwon Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market will establish itself as a logistics hub for agricultural and marine products in southern Gyeonggi."
