Bereaved Family of West Sea Killed Official "Will File Criminal Complaint Against Former President Moon Jae-in"

[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] The bereaved family of a Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries official who was killed by North Korean soldiers in the West Sea two years ago announced that they will file a complaint with the prosecution against former President Moon Jae-in and others for not cooperating with the Board of Audit and Inspection's investigation.

Lee Rae-jin, the older brother of the late Lee Dae-jun, stated on the 5th that he plans to file a complaint with the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on the 7th against former President Moon, former National Intelligence Service Director Park Ji-won, and former National Security Office Chief Seo Hoon for violating the Board of Audit and Inspection Act.

Lee claims that former President Moon violated the Board of Audit and Inspection Act by not responding to the Board's written investigation request related to the killing incident. He also asserts that former Director Park and former Chief Seo unlawfully refused the Board's summons for an appearance investigation.

According to the Board of Audit and Inspection Act, the Board may request submission of materials or attendance and responses from institutions beyond those subject to audits under this law if necessary. There is a provision that allows for punishment if such requests are not complied with without justifiable reasons.

Lee's side said, "This time, we will only file a complaint against former President Moon for not responding to the written investigation," adding, "Complaints related to the failure to rescue Lee Dae-jun and the announcement that he defected to the North will be filed separately later."

The Board of Audit and Inspection is focusing on verifying the process by which the incident of Lee Dae-jun, who was drifting in the West Sea in September 2020 and was shot dead by North Korean soldiers, was reported to related agencies, and the circumstances under which it was announced that Lee attempted to defect to the North. The audit targets include nine organizations: the National Security Office, Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Ministry of Unification, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Intelligence Service, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Korea Coast Guard, and Naval Headquarters.
