Seoul Mayor's Award - Social Contribution Category
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Tae-min] Hyundai Engineering, which received the Seoul Metropolitan Mayor's Award in the Social Contribution category of this year's Asia Construction Comprehensive Awards, has taken the lead in solving community issues and creating social value through social contribution activities and collaboration.
Since 2017, Hyundai Engineering has been conducting donation activities with the vocational rehabilitation facility for the disabled, 'Goodwill Store.' They have actively supported the creation of jobs for people with disabilities by assisting in opening new stores. Moreover, moving beyond simple donation forms, they have created jobs where disabled workers directly participate in the entire process of reprocessing and commercialization of goods, including sorting, processing, and packaging, helping to establish a foundation for independence.
They have also taken the lead in support activities for marginalized neighbors within the local community. Hyundai Engineering signed an MOU with Seoul City in 2013 and has been supporting residents of jjokbangchon (small-room villages) through housing support, self-sufficiency support, emotional support, goods sponsorship, and volunteer activities.
Representative projects include 'Didimdol House,' which remodels old jjokbang rooms and re-leases them to residents at low cost, and 'Kkotpiuda,' a communal workshop that produces and sells various floral products to help emotional vitality and economic independence. Other activities include the ‘Didimdol Cultural Classroom,’ which helps foster positive interpersonal relationships, and the ‘Chuseok Homecoming Visit’ for jjokbang residents who have not been able to visit their hometowns for a long time. Hyundai Engineering was also highly praised for significantly contributing to housing stabilization and self-sufficiency of socially marginalized jjokbangchon residents and received the ‘Seoul Metropolitan Welfare Award’ Excellence Prize.
In addition, they have consistently carried out the ‘Gift House Campaign,’ which helps families in disaster crises by utilizing modular houses developed in-house. Starting in 2015 in Eumseong, Chungbuk, they have supported a total of 32 modular houses across 13 regions nationwide, including Cheongsong in Gyeongbuk, Pocheon in Gyeonggi, Jinan in Jeonbuk, Hongcheon in Gangwon, Jangheung in Jeonnam, Okcheon in Chungbuk, Wanju and Gimje in Jeonbuk.
They are also strengthening the ‘Integrated Cooperative Social Contribution Model’ to expand the scope of social contribution cooperation. The ‘New Hope School Project’ is Hyundai Engineering’s representative overseas social contribution activity since 2010, providing educational opportunities to children in underprivileged areas by constructing, expanding, and renovating school facilities in countries where they operate overseas.
Recently, Hyundai Engineering collaborated with Indonesian government agencies such as the Balikpapan Education and Culture Office and the Regional Development Planning Agency, as well as specialized NGOs, to expand support beyond school renovations to include the establishment of e-learning education infrastructure locally. A Hyundai Engineering official stated, "We plan to carry out educational support activities over three years within this year, providing e-learning educational environments to about 7,800 students, residents, and teachers in the Balikpapan area of Indonesia."
