Gangnam-gu Mayor Jo Seong-myeong Delivers Letter to Ministry of Land Urging Resumption of Operation at Samseong-dong Urban Airport Terminal

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangnam-gu (Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) sent a letter on the 19th urging the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Korea International Trade Association, and Korea City Airport Terminal to resume operations of the Samseong-dong City Airport Terminal, a key infrastructure and airport in the heart of Gangnam.

The letter, issued under Mayor Jo’s name, expressed concerns about the inconvenience to citizens using the airport and the impact on the local economy if the Samseong-dong City Airport Terminal were to close, as recently reported in the media. It urged related agencies to make a progressive decision to ensure the terminal’s operations resume normally.

The Samseong-dong City Airport Terminal has been temporarily closed from April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and remains uncertain whether it will reopen after September this year.

Opened in 1990, the City Airport Terminal has provided convenience for 32 years to local residents, tourists, and numerous businesspeople traveling overseas. It allows passengers to complete check-in, baggage handling, and departure procedures in downtown Seoul before heading to Incheon Airport, and offers direct limousine bus services to the airport, resulting in high user satisfaction.

Before sending the letter, the district office strongly emphasized the necessity of the Samseong-dong City Airport Terminal through media coverage and participation in meetings with related agencies, firmly expressing its position on normal operation.

Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, said, “The Samseong-dong area is poised to become a world-renowned destination, and the role and locational competitiveness of the City Airport Terminal will grow beyond imagination.” He added, “We urge related agencies to make a progressive decision to resume the terminal’s operations.”
