Geumcheon-gu to Hold Byeoljanggil Clock Tower Completion Ceremony and Alley Festival from 2 PM on the 23rd
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that on September 23rd from 2 PM, a clock tower completion ceremony and alley festival will be held on Byeoljang-gil in Siheung 5-dong.
Organized by the Byeoljang-gil Residents' Council, this festival is a meaningful event that embodies the wishes of local residents and merchants to commemorate the completion of the clock tower, which will become a symbol of Byeoljang-gil, and to revitalize the alleyway commercial district.
The festival will take place from 2 PM to 8 PM on the 23rd throughout the Byeoljang-gil area, featuring various programs such as Byeoljang-gil retro games, dalgona candy making experience, Byeoljang-gil history quiz, and congratulatory performances. The highlight of the festival will be the unveiling and lighting ceremony of the clock tower, along with various prize draws and events.
The Byeoljang-gil area was the site of the Siheung villa of the late Prime Minister Jang Taek-sang, and the name Byeoljang-gil originates from the road leading to Byeoljang Mountain located behind the villa. Additionally, this area was a key route of the Siheung Haenggung where King Jeongjo stayed during his royal procession, and it is home to the Siheung Hyunryeong Seonjeongbi monument and a ginkgo tree designated as a protected tree.
Selected as a Seoul city alleyway regeneration project site in 2020, Byeoljang-gil is undergoing transformation under the name "Beautiful Byeoljang Street," and it is a meaningful place for local residents where old stories are hidden throughout the alleys.
Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “I would like to thank the Byeoljang-gil Residents' Council and merchants who prepared and participated in the festival together despite the difficult circumstances caused by COVID-19. We will continue to pay attention and support so that the alley market can be further revitalized and developed.”
