Soaring Son Heung-min? First University Drone Soccer Team Established in Busan... Dongmyung University's Military Science Department 'Dongmyung Hero' Launches Challenge Dongmyung University Military Science Department Drone Soccer Team Dongmyung Hero Inauguration Ceremony.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Dongmyung University has officially established the first-ever "flying" soccer team in the Busan area.

On the 13th, the Military Science Department at Dongmyung University held the inauguration ceremony for the drone soccer team "Dongmyung Hero" (led by Director Jeong Dong), composed of experts and department students, and announced their intention to compete in various domestic and international tournaments.

The Dongmyung University drone soccer team is led by Professor Jeong Dong of the Military Science Department as director, with Kim Young-chul, CEO of Drone Village, serving as coach. The team consists of captain Ryu Geon-hee and eight student players from the Military Science Department.

Since last summer vacation, the team has been training twice a week, steadily improving their skills and building teamwork. They are working hard in preparation and practice with the goal of participating in the national tournament in the second half of the year.

Drone soccer uses drones encased in protective gear made of carbon material as the ball. The objective is to pass the drone through a circular goalpost 3 meters above the ground to score. It is a new concept sport emerging in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Two teams of five players each play three matches lasting three minutes each to determine the winner. The five player positions are Striker, Guide, Libero (forward blocker), Sweeper (rear blocker), and Keeper.

With the establishment of Dongmyung Hero, the Military Science Department’s drone soccer team at Dongmyung University has taken the lead as the pioneer of university drone soccer in the Busan area.

Recognizing the growing need for drone operation technology in the Fourth Industrial Revolution era, Dongmyung University opened the first drone education research center among military science departments nationwide in August last year. Additionally, to expand the base and activity scope of drones, the university introduced professional drone soccer and has been supporting various startups and club activities.

Professor Na Seung-hak, head of the Military Science Department, said, “We will participate in national tournaments to raise the prestige of Dongmyung University’s Military Science Department,” and added, “We will take the lead in nurturing ‘Do-ing’ talents who pursue challenge, experience, and practice, which are the university’s goals.”

The Military Science Department’s Drone Education Research Center at Dongmyung University operates drone piloting, drone manufacturing, and drone soccer classes, expanding the drone base among students, the general public, and seniors in Busan, while offering programs that grant drone certification.

The Military Science Department at Dongmyung University is the only such department in Busan and Ulsan and has been recruiting new students for the 2025 academic year through early admission from the 13th to the 17th.

The university announced that it plans to recruit 35 students in this early admission and select outstanding students through academic performance, interviews, and physical fitness tests.

A university official stated, “Unlike previous years, this year’s physical fitness test has eased two events?push-ups and sit-ups?reducing the burden on applicants.”

Having been established for over nine years, the department boasts a 100% commissioning rate of graduates as officers annually through military scholarships and ROTC. Its strengths include ▲free acquisition of national drone certifications following the opening of the nation’s first drone education research center ▲character education led by young officer instructors ▲customized education guidance by professors specializing in written evaluations.
