Ministry of Science and ICT to Promote Designation of Data Safe Zones... One Designation Planned Within the Year

Announcement of Designation Plan and Holding of Briefing Session

[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 6th that it will issue a public notice on the 7th for applications to designate 'Data Safe Zones' and proceed with the designation of Data Safe Zones.

A Data Safe Zone is a space where non-open data can be analyzed and utilized within a secured environment. It allows the export and use of analysis results excluding the original data, thereby alleviating concerns about the leakage of non-open data while meeting the demand for high-quality data analysis.

Organizations such as data-related companies and public institutions that wish to operate a Data Safe Zone under the Data Industry Act can prepare the application form and related documents according to the designation guidelines and apply for designation at any time (continuous acceptance).

The designation plan and related guidelines can be found on the Ministry of Science and ICT website. An explanatory session on the system will be held on the 21st of this month at 2 p.m. at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Um Yeol, Director of AI-based Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "We understand that about 21 public and private institutions nationwide are currently operating spaces that provide non-open data," and added, "We hope that these will grow into hubs designated as Data Safe Zones, where high-quality data can be utilized without concerns about data leakage."
