The 'Common + Elective Subjects' Structure for Korean, Math, and Vocational Exploration Areas, Continued Application of the Abolition of Social and Science Exploration Area Separation
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The 2025 College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) will be held on November 14, 2024, and the results will be announced on December 6.
On the 24th, the Ministry of Education announced the "2025 College Scholastic Ability Test Basic Plan," which includes the test date and test areas for the 2025 academic year CSAT.
The 2025 CSAT will be taken by current first-year high school students in 2024, and the system introduced in the 2022 academic year will be applied, including the Korean, Mathematics, and Vocational Exploration areas structured as "common + elective" subjects, and the abolition of the distinction between social and science exploration areas.
The test areas include Korean, Mathematics, English, Korean History, Exploration (Social Studies, Science, Vocational), and Second Foreign Language/Chinese Characters. The Korean History section is mandatory, while other areas and subjects can be freely chosen in part or in whole. The question format is multiple-choice with five options, and 30% of the Mathematics questions will be short-answer.
Scores for Korean History, English, and Second Foreign Language/Chinese Characters will be recorded only as grades (absolute evaluation), with grades divided into nine levels based on fixed score distribution from raw scores. Other test areas and subjects will be recorded with standard scores, percentiles, and grades (relative evaluation).
Furthermore, test results of those who commit cheating will be invalidated, and their eligibility to take the 2026 CSAT will be suspended. However, for minor cheating offenses such as continuing to write answers after the end signal determined by the Minister of Education or possessing prohibited items, the test will be invalidated but eligibility for the next year's CSAT will not be suspended.
The Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation plans to announce the detailed "2025 College Scholastic Ability Test Implementation Basic Plan" in March 2024.
