[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jung-wan] At the Eulji Cabinet Meeting held on the 22nd, President Yoon Seok-yeol and cabinet members attended the meeting wearing green civil defense uniforms.
The green civil defense uniforms worn by President Yoon and others that day are one of five prototype colors prepared by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety for the revamp of civil defense uniforms. On the left chest is a logo combining the international civil defense mark symbolizing peace and citizen protection (a blue triangle on an orange background) with Korean elements, and the Taegeukgi flag is attached to the left arm. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety plans to revamp the existing yellow civil defense uniforms for the first time in 17 years.
Earlier, Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min visited heavy rain disaster sites several times and was the first to wear one of the new civil defense uniform prototypes. The prototype he wore was navy blue.
Sangmin Lee, the 2nd Deputy Head of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety), attended the COVID-19 response Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters meeting held on the morning of the 5th at the Seoul Situation Center of the Central Disaster and Safety Situation Room in the Government Seoul Office Building, wearing a prototype civil defense uniform used in disaster situations. The new civil defense uniform prototypes come in five types: green, navy, dark green, gray, and beige. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety plans to conduct a trial application of the prototypes during the Eulji Exercise held from the 22nd to the 25th and make a final decision afterward.
Currently, it is reported that the colors have been narrowed down to green and navy for the new civil defense uniforms. According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety targeting 30,000 people, green and navy were the most preferred colors for the new civil defense uniforms, with a similar number of people also favoring beige.
On the afternoon of June 24, nine new emergency duty uniform redesign proposals were displayed in the lobby of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety at Government Sejong 2 Complex in Sejong City to gather opinions for improving civil defense uniforms, and employees are examining them. During this Eulji Exercise, officials from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Jeonnam Province, and Buyeo County in Chungnam wore the navy prototype, while Seoul City, Gyeongbuk Province, and Gumi City in Gyeongbuk wore the green prototype. Other ministries and local governments participated in the Eulji Exercise wearing the existing yellow civil defense uniforms.
Previously, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced plans to revamp the civil defense uniforms for the first time in 17 years. The current civil defense uniforms are said to have weak functionality such as waterproofing and flame resistance needed for field activities, and there have been calls for improvement regarding the uniform wearing method, which is uniformly yellow regardless of purpose and season, unlike foreign cases where uniforms are differentiated by use and season, according to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
