Virtualization Solution Providers
Easy to Imitate, Unique Technology Essential
Will Enhance Efficiency by Combining with AI
[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] "In the software industry, cloud-based subscription SaaS (Software as a Service) has become the trend, but without artificial intelligence (AI) support, companies will inevitably fall behind in competition."
Kim Yooncheol, CEO of virtualization solution company Pillaware, said, "In the past, the concept was to purchase a single program CD for permanent use, but nowadays it has changed to subscribing and using it on the cloud. However, once it is on the cloud, imitation becomes possible, so for companies to maintain competitiveness, proprietary AI technology or big data is essential," he emphasized.
Kim, who graduated from Korea University with a degree in linguistics, worked at LG-EDS (now LG CNS) before founding Pillanet in 2002 after seeing the growth potential of the IT industry. Initially, he provided consulting services to customers using Microsoft (MS) products. Later, global cloud computing company VMware gained attention with its proprietary virtualization solution technology, and seeing VMware's growth potential, Kim founded Pillaware in 2010.
Filaware employees are monitoring the product description of 'Smart Cloud Portal V3,' which will be launched in the United States in early next month.
Pillaware provides services to build cloud systems for clients using VMware's virtualization solutions. Major clients include Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. Kim said, "We attach our developed Smart Cloud Portal (SCP) program as an add-on to VMware products, which are offered in a basic form according to global standards, to help customers use these products easily. For example, Samsung Electronics uses our product across all its business sites," he explained.
In the past, companies managed data by purchasing multiple physical computers for each business division, which incurred high costs for space setup and hardware maintenance. However, nowadays, companies manage data by building virtual desktops (VDI) on the cloud. Currently, VMware holds a 70% market share in the global VDI market. Pillaware received the 'Partner of the Year' award from VMware in 2020 and the 'Top Technical Certification in Network Virtualization' in 2021.
Kim said that the movement toward cloud adoption by companies accelerated sharply due to COVID-19. The normalization of remote work and the significant growth of 4th Industrial Revolution-related industries such as the metaverse (extended virtual world), virtual assets, and AI have contributed to this. Pillaware expects to achieve its highest-ever sales of 37 billion KRW this year.
Kim, who is working on new ideas, is focusing on the combination of cloud and AI. On the 18th, he gave a presentation on "Machine Learning through VMware Logs" at the conference "Language Research in the Deep Learning Era," hosted by Korea University's Language Information Research Institute and others. Kim said, "In the future, the answer will lie not in simple cloud construction but in enhancing user convenience and administrator efficiency by utilizing AI technology and big data."
Kim plans to showcase Pillaware's 'Smart Cloud Portal V3,' a virtual desktop management automation solution developed over 10 years, at a global conference in San Francisco, USA, early next month. He said, "We plan to actively expand our global business, including in the US, using the new product launch as a stepping stone. If sales occur through overseas subsidiaries, next year's sales could exceed 50 billion KRW," he confidently stated.
