[Asia Economy Reporter Kum Bo-ryeong] On the 7th of last month, former party leader Lee Jun-seok was disciplined with a '6-month suspension of party membership rights' by the People Power Party Ethics Committee. Since then, he has been expressing his feelings by sharing animation theme songs.
On the night of the 21st, Lee posted the song "Hakuna Matata" from the animation The Lion King on his Facebook.
This phrase, which means "no worries" in Swahili, is interpreted as "no worries for the rest of your days." The Lion King tells the story of the protagonist "Simba," who is driven out of the lion kingdom by his uncle "Scar's" conspiracy but meets friends like "Timon" and "Pumbaa," grows up, defeats Scar, and reclaims the lion kingdom.
In other words, Lee likened himself to Simba and President Yoon Seok-yeol or Yoon's key aides (Yoonhaekgwan) to Scar. Lee also left a message saying "To Scar" when posting this song.
After receiving the disciplinary action last month, on the 8th, Lee shared "Colors of the Wind" from Pocahontas on Facebook. He had previously used this song in 2018 to criticize Ahn Cheol-soo, then a Seoul mayoral candidate, who caused a "nomination controversy." The lyrics include lines such as "If you open the door of your heart wide, the whole world looks beautiful," "You never know how big a tree will grow until you cut it down," and "If we see the beautiful world of light together, we can become one."
On the 29th of last month, he posted a Korean version video of "Someday" from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Along with it, he wrote, "Disney songs always have a message," and "Dedicated to the people of that soulless island." The song contains lyrics like "When the years pass and that day comes, you will know," and "On the victorious day, everyone will go outside and bask in the sunlight. Even if dark clouds cover it, wait for the bright new day when the sun rises." The "island" Lee referred to is interpreted as Yeouido.
Earlier, on the 18th, Lee also shared "Speechless" from Aladdin. This song was sung by Princess Jasmine as she resisted being forcibly detained. The lyrics include "I will never be broken. Just try to shut my mouth and stop me," and "I will not be silent. You cannot stop me. I will not tremble in fear." As Lee continued his attacks on President Yoon and Yoonhaekgwan, some voices called for him to "restrain himself," to which Lee responded with this song.
Along with this, Lee emphasized, "I am not a carpet and I drive an electric car, but anyway, the ending of Aladdin is 'A Whole New World.'"
