[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Pyeonghwa] LG Electronics announced on the 22nd that it will strengthen its European market strategy with a new energy-efficient "2-door top refrigerator, bottom freezer (domestic name: Modern Edge Refrigerator)" model.
The new product has the highest energy rating of A in Europe. Previously, the European Union (EU) Commission introduced strict refrigerator energy rating standards in March last year to help energy-conscious European consumers reduce electricity bills and carbon footprints. The product ratings were changed from the previous system of A+++, A++, A+ to a more intuitive A~G scale for consumers.
The new product's annual power consumption according to European standards is 99 kilowatt-hours (kWh/y), which is 10% less compared to LG Electronics' existing A-rated refrigerators. Converted to domestic electricity costs, this amounts to approximately 25,000 KRW per year. This improvement in energy efficiency is due to the inclusion of LG Electronics' differentiated core component, the "Inverter Linear Compressor." The linear compressor operates with linear motion instead of rotation, resulting in less energy loss during power transmission. LG Electronics also redesigned the flow path by improving component structures such as the heat exchanger to ensure even cold air distribution.
This product features a 384-liter capacity and a slim design to meet the space efficiency demands of European consumers, while allowing efficient storage of various ingredients in multiple compartments. It also includes the "24-hour automatic temperature control" function to keep refrigerated food fresh and the "Door Cooling+" function to evenly cool the refrigerator door.
LG Electronics plans to unveil the new product at the global home appliance exhibition "IFA 2022" held in early September in Berlin, Germany. Lee Hyunmuk, Head of the Kitchen Appliance Division at LG Electronics H&A Business Division, said, "We will strengthen our European refrigerator market strategy by leading with new products that offer differentiated customer experiences based on advanced core component technology."
