[Asia Economy Culture Young Intern Reporter] Emart24 has halted sales of its 'Butter Sand that Melts Like My Stocks,' released on the 8th, amid controversy that it mocks stock investors. Emart announced that the product will be re-released with a new name.
The product is a private brand (PB) item of Emart24, with sister products such as 'Endure This Week Too Butter Salt Cookie,' 'Annual Leave Half-Day Green Tea Cookie,' and 'Feeling Very Choco-like Choco Cookie.' These products are known to be creations of the task force 'Delicious Expedition,' mainly composed of the MZ generation.
Netizens responded with comments like "It's funny and sad," and "A clever naming." However, some criticized, saying, "Are you mocking retail investors who went bust in stocks?" and "The blue color also signifies a stock decline."
In response to the criticism, an Emart24 official said, "We did not anticipate that consumers might feel uncomfortable," adding, "We plan to rename and repackage the product. We will pay more careful attention from the customer's perspective when naming products in the future."
