[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] A woman in her 20s who disappeared after leaving her car parked on the Incheon Bridge was rescued at sea but ultimately died.
According to Yonhap News on the 16th, the Incheon Coast Guard received a report from the Incheon Bridge control room around 9:04 a.m. the previous day that a car without a driver was parked on the shoulder of the Incheon Bridge in Songdo-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, heading toward Incheon International Airport.
Based on nearby closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, the Coast Guard believed that the driver, a woman in her 20s identified as Ms. A, had fallen into the sea and conducted a search operation. About 40 minutes after the report, Ms. A was rescued near the Incheon Bridge at sea. At the time, she was unconscious and without a pulse, and was transported to a nearby hospital but eventually passed away.
The Coast Guard is investigating the exact circumstances of the incident based on CCTV footage and other evidence. It is known that there were no passengers in the vehicle.
Meanwhile, several suicide attempts have occurred on the Incheon Bridge. On April 30, a man in his 30s parked his car and jumped to his death. In February, a woman in her 40s disappeared from a vehicle stopped on the Incheon Bridge late at night. Last year, six fall accidents occurred over three months from May to July.
Opened in October 2009, the Incheon Bridge connects Yeongjong Island and Songdo International City but has no pedestrian walkway, so people cannot cross the bridge on foot. The road near the main tower of the Incheon Bridge is known to be about the height of a 30-story apartment building. Because of this, falling from the Incheon Bridge is highly likely to result in instant death. It is reported that safety railings were not installed on the Incheon Bridge due to load issues.
