Ulsan Genome Special Zone Begins Bio-Data Demonstration... "Contributing to New Medical Technology Development"

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The government is establishing a Bio Data Farm in the Ulsan Genome Service Industry Regulatory Free Zone to lay the foundation for the development of new medical technologies.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups and Ulsan City announced on the 3rd that they will launch the "Demonstration of Bio Data Farm Utilization Based on Genome Data of 10,000 People" in the Ulsan Genome Service Industry Regulatory Free Zone.

The Ulsan Genome Free Zone was designated with the goal of revitalizing the biohealth industry through the construction and utilization of genome-based bio big data.

Small and medium-sized enterprises need high-quality, large-scale bio data to provide biohealthcare-related services. However, due to the lack of data and regulatory restrictions on its use, commercialization has been limited. Therefore, based on the Ulsan regional infrastructure secured through the 10,000-person genome project, three demonstration projects will be promoted.

The first task, "Demonstration of Bio Data Farm Construction and Operation," involves building a Bio Data Farm capable of collecting, analyzing, and managing bio big data related to genetics and medical information, and providing high-quality bio big data to companies and others. The Bio Data Farm is expected to become the cornerstone for various healthcare developments.

The second task, "Demonstration of Diagnostic Marker Development by Disease," aims to develop diagnostic markers that can precisely predict diseases (cardiovascular, depression, complex chronic diseases) by utilizing the bio big data provided by the Bio Data Farm. This is expected to contribute to the development of new medical technologies such as personalized diagnosis and treatment.

The third task, "Demonstration of Infectious Disease Outbreak Response Platform Construction," plans to establish a precise analysis platform for infectious disease patient data to discover infectious disease diagnostic kits, vaccines, and candidate therapeutic substances.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups plans to work with the Ministry of Health and Welfare to revise regulatory laws to ensure that the successful demonstration of the Ulsan Genome Free Zone can serve as a catalyst for revitalizing the bio medical industry.

Kwon Hye-rin, head of the Regulatory Free Zone Planning Team at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, stated, "We will actively support demonstration projects so that various customized medical and healthcare service industries can grow through the industrialization of genome information."
