Efforts to Ease Summer Grocery Burden Amid High Inflation
"Will Diversify Discounted Products Including Summer Staples"
The model is showcasing discounted products at Homeplus Gangseo Branch in accordance with the government's VAT exemption policy on simply processed food products.
Major supermarkets have started discounting key items to ease the burden of grocery prices. They are adding their own discount events in line with government policies aimed at stabilizing prices, trying to attract more customers.
According to the distribution industry on the 2nd, major supermarkets such as Emart, Lotte Mart, Homeplus, and Nonghyup Hanaro Mart are offering discounts on products eligible for the government's temporary VAT exemption policy, as well as up to 40% off imported pork subject to a 0% tariff rate under the quota system.
Emart has reduced prices by 10% on about 500 VAT-exempt products since the day before. The eligible items include simply processed food products packaged in vinyl, plastic, or bottles, such as soy sauce, soybean paste, red pepper paste, kimchi, pickled radish, and salted seafood. Emart is actively participating in the government's price stabilization policy by offering up to 50% discounts on representative products like sauces, kimchi, and salted seafood exempt from VAT until the 13th of this month. Cheongjeongwon Taeyangcho Chal Gochujang 2.5kg is discounted by 50%, Cheongjeongwon Haetsal Dameun Jin Ganjang Gold 1.7L is offered as a 1+1 deal, and CJ Haechandle Traditional Doenjang 500g is sold at 50% off when purchasing two.
Lotte Mart also started a 10% discount on over 350 items including kimchi, sauces, and coffee from the day before. From today until the 13th, they are holding a discount event with up to 50% off on some sauces, kimchi, and salted seafood products. Haechandle Taeyangcho Gold Gochujang (1kg), Cheongjeongwon Traditional Safe Raw Doenjang (2kg), and Cheongjeongwon Low-Salt Fermented Kelp Soy Sauce (1.7L) are included. Purchasing two event items with the event card provides an additional 10% discount. CJ Bibigo Aged Kimchi (400g), Jongga House Refreshing White Radish Water Kimchi (1.2kg), Hanseong Myeongran (180g) and Changran (230g), CJ Haseonjeong Gimbap Danmuji (370g) are also offered at event prices. Cross-purchasing is allowed only for items in the flyer event.
Homeplus is also offering over 323 items including CJ Haechandle Traditional Doenjang (500g), Cheongjeongwon Sunchang Chal Gochujang (1kg), and Sempio Yangjo Jin Ganjang 501 (1.7L) at discounts of 10% or more. Kimchi varieties, soybean paste, red pepper paste, soy sauce, ssamjang, fish sauce, pickled products, and salted seafood are included. Nonghyup Distribution is selling VAT-exempt products at about 10% lower prices than usual at Hanaro Mart Yangjae and Changdong stores until December 31 next year.
They also plan to ease shopping burdens with discounts on representative summer products. Lotte Mart is holding a 'Summer Food Festival' until the 6th, featuring various summer foods including fruits and vacation foods. Watermelons, popular in summer, are offered at event prices, along with whiteleg shrimp, black tiger shrimp, and various meal kits with event and card discounts. Homeplus is also running an 'Emergency Price Stabilization Project' until the 6th, offering fresh foods and fresh processed foods with discounts up to 50%.
Meanwhile, a discount event of up to 40% on imported pork is also underway. As pork prices soared due to rising feed costs caused by a surge in international grain prices, the government introduced a 0% tariff quota, and major supermarkets started discount events reflecting this from the day before.
Emart is selling 50 tons of Canadian chilled pork belly and neck until today at about 30% off when accumulating Shinsegae points (limited to 1kg per person). Canadian pork, which previously had an 8.6% tariff, is subject to a 0% tariff quota from customs clearance on June 23. From the 3rd, products will be sold at prices about 10% lower than the usual retail price. By simplifying the distribution structure through direct transactions with Canada, they plan to continuously prevent price increases and hold monthly events for Canadian pork.
Lotte Mart is also offering Canadian chilled pork belly and neck at a 20% discount compared to the regular price until the 6th. After the event, they plan to sell at prices about 10% lower than the regular price. Lotte Mart explained, "We have increased the monthly import volume of Canadian pork from about 30 tons last year to about 80 tons per month."
Homeplus is also selling Canadian imported pork at prices up to 40% lower through pre-planned events until the 6th. My Homeplus membership members can purchase 'Barley-Fed Pork Belly and Neck' (Canadian origin) at event prices without purchase quantity limits.
