Say "Educational Information Technology" instead of "Edu Tech"

'Big Tech' Alternative Term Recommended as 'Information Technology Conglomerates'

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on the 1st that 'edu tech' be replaced with the Korean term '교육 정보 기술' (education information technology). They also suggested '정보 기술 대기업' (information technology conglomerate) as the Korean alternative for 'big tech.'

Edu tech refers to information and communication technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence applied in the education sector. At the New Words Meeting held on the 15th of last month, the Ministry and the Institute reviewed the appropriateness and usability of the term and decided on '교육 정보 기술' as the replacement. The selection also reflected survey results. In a public acceptance survey conducted from the 17th to the 23rd of last month with about 2,000 participants, 87.2% of respondents answered that the term was appropriate. 65.9% agreed on the necessity of a Korean alternative.

Big tech refers to large-scale information technology companies with high market shares. In the domestic financial industry, the term is mainly used to describe companies that have entered the financial market after providing online platforms. The appropriate Korean term selected was '정보 기술 대기업.'

The New Words Meeting is a committee that provides Korean alternatives easily understood by the general public before difficult foreign neologisms spread. Experts from various fields such as Korean language, foreign languages, education, publicity and publishing, information and communication, and media participate. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language plan to continuously promote the use of these alternatives, led by government ministries and media outlets.
