Internal Candidate Appointed as Commissioner After 4 Years

Yu Hee-dong, the deputy director of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), has been appointed as the new head of the KMA. Director Kim is a professional bureaucrat who has worked at the KMA for over 30 years.

Born in 1963, Director Yu graduated from Yonsei University with a degree in Astronomy and Meteorology in 1986, earned a master's degree from the same university, and obtained a doctorate from the University of Oklahoma in the United States.

Director Yu began his career in 1990 as a meteorological researcher and has held various positions including Forecast Situation Division Chief, Numerical Model Development Division Chief, Forecast Policy Division Chief, Climate Science Bureau Chief, Meteorological Services Promotion Bureau Chief, Observation Base Bureau Chief, Forecast Bureau Chief, Busan Regional Meteorological Administration Chief, and Planning and Coordination Officer.

Director Yu has extensive experience not only in the core tasks of the KMA such as forecasting and meteorological observation but also in administrative duties. He is the first internal appointee as director in four years since former Director Nam Jae-cheol. He advocated the need for an independent numerical forecast model, leading to the development of the "Korean Numerical Forecast Model" (KIM).
