"Storytelling Experiential Store"
Emart has carried out renovations at a total of 28 stores from 2020 through last year, achieving a remarkable sales growth rate compared to before. This year, it plans to renovate a total of 10 more stores.
On the 26th, Emart stated, "Starting with the Seoul Wolgye store in 2020, Emart's customer-centric store reconfiguration strategy has been producing good results," adding, "All 29 renovated stores, including 9 in 2020 and 19 in 2021, have achieved double-digit sales growth compared to before renovation." A representative store is the Emart Wolgye store, which reopened after renovation in May 2020. Analyzing the sales of the Wolgye store in its second year after renovation, Emart found that last month's sales increased by about 114% compared to April 2020, before the renovation.
In particular, the proportion of younger customers in their 30s and 40s increased after the renovation. Last month, the number of customers in their 30s visiting the Wolgye store and other renovated stores rose by 50.6%, and those in their 40s increased by 49.8% compared to April 2020 before renovation. Customers in their 20s also increased by about 35%. Due to these changes, Emart Wolgye ranked first in sales among Emart stores last year.
Emart explained that the core keyword of the renovation is "rebirth from the customer's perspective." By completely innovating existing stores and reorganizing spaces, they provide customer-oriented services, transforming stores into places where customers want to visit and stay longer. While online-based retailers emphasize low prices and convenience, Emart focused on the offline retailer's differentiating point of "experience" through renovation. The focus was on providing spaces where customers can enjoy a pleasant shopping experience with their families beyond just purchasing products.
On this day, Emart opened its fourth renovated store of the year, the Gyeonggi Gwangju store. Emart said, "The Gyeonggi Gwangju store is located in an area where large-scale housing developments are planned by 2024, and we proactively renovated the store to offer various benefits to customers in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province." Approximately 7,000 households are scheduled to move into the vicinity (within a 5 km radius) of the Gyeonggi Gwangju store by 2024. Accordingly, Emart introduced specialty stores focused on essential daily goods that embody Emart's experience, such as Electromart, Toy Kingdom, and At Home, to satisfy a wide range of customers from the MZ generation (Millennials + Generation Z) to older age groups.
The grocery section also underwent significant changes. The fresh food section was transformed into a "storytelling experiential store" where customers can engage their five senses. Through product variety diversification, unique fruits that can only be found at Emart were prepared, and the store, which was previously a display space for product sales, was changed into a place that delivers interesting information from the customer's perspective. Various food specialty zones, including the integrated liquor store Wine & Liquor and a bakery, were also introduced.
