"Upgrade the Seeds Planted by the Lee Family"
Attending Roh Memorial Ceremony, Aiming for Opposition Unity
[Asia Economy Reporters Oh Ju-yeon and Park Jun-i] On the 23rd, nine days before the June 1 local elections, Kim Dong-yeon, the Democratic Party of Korea candidate for Gyeonggi Province governor, appealed for support by pledging to expand public platforms. In the afternoon, he plans to attend the 13th anniversary memorial service of former President Roh Moo-hyun’s passing, aiming to boost his neck-and-neck approval ratings for the Gyeonggi governorship. Despite somewhat unfavorable circumstances compared to the People Power Party due to President Yoon Suk-yeol’s inauguration and President Joe Biden’s visit to Korea, he intends to leverage this memorial service as a turning point to consolidate his support base and gain momentum.

On the same day, Kim announced on Facebook, "We will open the era of ‘K-Express’ by expanding ‘Baedal Teukgeup,’ which has high satisfaction among residents, self-employed workers, and small business owners, to taxis and mobility services." He stated, "With a more strengthened public K-Express, we will check the monopoly of giant capital in the platform market and firmly establish a local economic model where small businesses, workers, and consumers coexist." He pledged to strengthen and newly introduce local government-level public platforms such as ‘Baedal Teukgeup,’ ‘Taxi Teukgeup,’ and the one-stop transportation platform ‘Mobility Teukgeup.’ He emphasized, "I will upgrade the public platforms that Lee Jae-myung planted and sprouted, and make them bloom fully."
In the afternoon, he will attend the memorial service for former President Roh held in Bongha Village, Gimhae, Gyeongnam, along with about 200 political and government figures including former President Moon Jae-in, Democratic Party’s General Election Committee Chairman Lee Jae-myung, and co-chairpersons Yoon Ho-jung and Park Ji-hyun. A representative from Kim’s campaign said, "We believe that the progressive camp’s consolidation has not yet been achieved ahead of the June 1 local elections," adding, "We hope this will serve as a stepping stone for the progressive camp’s unity and help increase approval ratings."
