[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-ho Kim] LG Display has established Korea's first recruitment-linked display contract department at the graduate schools of Yonsei University, Hanyang University, and Sungkyunkwan University to cultivate master's and doctoral level display specialists.

According to LG Display on the 17th, an agreement to establish the 'Department of Display Convergence Engineering' was signed yesterday at LG Science Park in Magok, Seoul. Through this agreement, LG Display and the three universities plan to select and nurture 10 master's and doctoral level talents from each graduate school annually starting from the 2023 academic year.

LG Display will support the selected students with full tuition fees during their enrollment, tuition subsidies, research funds, and guarantee employment at LG Display after graduation.

Prior to this, LG Display signed an agreement last December with Yonsei University to establish Korea's first recruitment-linked display convergence engineering undergraduate program. By expanding the department to the graduate schools of these three universities, they aim to build a talent cultivation system spanning from undergraduate to master's and doctoral programs, securing more than 200 display specialists by 2027.

The graduate Department of Display Convergence Engineering plans to develop a specialized curriculum to nurture talents equipped with engineering expertise and practical industrial experience. Customized education and research collaboration tailored to the display industry will be conducted, covering basic technologies such as electrical, electronic, physics, chemistry, and materials, along with device, process, panel, optics, and algorithm research.

The display industry is increasingly demanding convergence-type talents capable of developing new concept products that can be applied to next-generation technological innovations and various industrial fields. By establishing specialized display departments at universities and graduate schools, LG Display expects to systematically secure outstanding talents who will become leaders in the next-generation display industry, including OLED.

Yoon Soo-young, CTO of LG Display, said, “The display industry is creating new markets through collaboration and convergence with various fields such as automobiles and architecture, along with next-generation technological innovations including artificial intelligence. We expect that by opening the graduate contract department and nurturing talents with expertise and broad understanding of various fields, it will become a new driving force for the next-generation display industry.”
