Opening Ceremony Held at Bitour Tire Building in Mangwon-dong at 3 PM on the 17th
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Park Gang-su, the People Power Party candidate for mayor of Mapo District, will hold an opening ceremony for his election office in Mangwon-dong, Mapo, two days before the official campaign for the June 1 local elections begins.
On the same day at 3 p.m., Park will open his election office on the 5th floor of the B-Tour Tire Building, 75 World Cup-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, marking the official start of his campaign.
Mapo is largely dominated by the Democratic Party of Korea, from the local member of the National Assembly to the district mayor and the chairperson of the district council, drawing attention to whether Park will bring a new wave of change to Mapo District.
Previously, in the June 13, 2018 local elections, Park ran for mayor of Mapo District as a Liberty Korea Party candidate. Although he narrowly lost amid a political climate favorable only to the Democratic Party, especially with the Singapore North Korea?United States summit held the day before the election, he emphasized being the "voice of the common people" and appealed to local voters, showing a relatively strong performance compared to other Liberty Korea Party candidates in Seoul's autonomous districts at the time.
Having lived in Mapo for 40 years, Park has managed media outlets such as Sisa Focus and Mapo Thank You News. He previously served as president of the Korea Disabled Shooting Federation and chaired the Disability Policy Committee at the Yeouido Institute, demonstrating his longstanding interest in socially vulnerable and marginalized groups.
In particular, last year, when Mapo District raised the basic cleaning fee for private sewage treatment facilities such as septic tanks by more than 10 percentage points, increasing the burden on residents, Park personally led a protest in front of the district office. He has continuously engaged in social activities for local residents and has launched his campaign under the mottos "A friend who supports you in difficult times" and "A better Mapo, a better district mayor."
In this election, his pledges include halving electricity and hot water bills for Mapo residents, providing free meals to all seniors aged 75 and over, establishing and operating a "District Sunlight Center" that supports pregnant women from early pregnancy through postpartum care, constructing a complex cultural welfare facility in Sangam-dong, setting up an IT youth startup support center on the site of Mapo Culture Center near Gongdeok Station, and promoting the Nanjido Religious Cultural Tourism Special Zone.
