Close Race Between Ruling and Opposition Candidates for Basic Local Government Heads in Chuncheon, Wonju, and Gangneung

Gangwon Province Governor Candidates, Kim Jin-tae 46.9% vs Lee Kwang-jae 43.6% Close Race Kim Jin-tae, the People Power Party candidate for Gangwon Governor, and Lee Kwang-jae, the Democratic Party candidate for Gangwon Governor [Candidate Election Camp]


[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] In the 6.1 local election poll for the Gangwon Province governor candidates, the People Power Party candidate Kim Jin-tae and the Democratic Party candidate Lee Kwang-jae are shown to be in a close race within the margin of error.


In a poll conducted by Chuncheon MBC, MBC Gangwon Yeongdong, and Wonju MBC through the polling agency Realmeter, targeting 812 eligible voters aged 18 and over residing in Gangwon Province on the 5th and 6th (with a sampling error of ±3.4% at a 95% confidence level), 46.9% of respondents chose candidate Kim Jin-tae, while 43.6% chose candidate Lee Kwang-jae when asked, "If tomorrow were the Gangwon Province governor election day, which of the following candidates would you vote for?"


The support difference between the two candidates is 3.3 percentage points, indicating a close race within the margin of error. Following were respondents who were unsure at 4.5%, none at 2.9%, and other candidates at 2.0%.


Candidate Kim had higher support among respondents in the Samcheok area (58.8%), those aged 60 and over (63.8%), and those in agriculture, forestry, livestock, and fisheries sectors (63.5%). Candidate Lee had higher support in the Wonju area (51.8%), among people in their 40s (58.9%) and 30s (54.2%), and among office workers, managers, and professionals (51.0%).


In the Chuncheon mayoral support poll (505 Chuncheon citizens, sampling error ±4.4% at 95% confidence level, conducted on the 5th and 6th), 42.0% of respondents chose candidate Yuk Dong-han. Following were People Power Party candidate Choi Seong-hyun at 33.8%, and independent candidate Lee Kwang-jun at 13.2%.


The support gap between candidates Yuk and Choi is 8.2 percentage points. Following were unsure at 5.0%, none at 4.4%, and others at 1.7%.


In the Wonju mayoral support poll (502 Wonju citizens, sampling error ±4.4% at 95% confidence level, conducted on the 5th and 6th), Democratic Party candidate Koo Ja-yeol received 43.6%, and People Power Party candidate Won Kang-soo received 40.3%, showing a close contest.


The support gap between the two candidates is 3.3 percentage points, within the margin of error. Independent candidate Lee Kang-hoo, who was eliminated from the People Power Party nomination and ran as an independent, recorded 7.2% support. Following were none at 3.7%, unsure at 3.0%, and others at 2.1%.


In the Gangneung mayoral support poll (504 Gangneung citizens, sampling error ±4.4% at 95% confidence level, conducted on the 5th and 6th), People Power Party candidate Kim Hong-gyu received 35.0%, independent candidate Kim Han-geun 27.4%, Democratic Party candidate Kim Woo-young 25.6%, and Justice Party candidate Lim Myung-hee 3.7%. Following were none at 3.2%, unsure at 3.1%, and others at 1.8%.


The Wonju Gap by-election for the National Assembly seat is a close race between People Power Party candidate Park Jeong-ha and Democratic Party candidate Won Chang-mook.


In the Wonju Gap National Assembly support poll (508 voters in the Wonju Gap electoral district, sampling error ±4.3% at 95% confidence level, conducted on the 5th and 6th), 45.2% of respondents chose candidate Park, and 39.2% chose candidate Won.


The support gap between the two candidates is 6.0 percentage points, within the margin of error. Following were none at 7.8%, unsure at 4.0%, and other candidates at 3.7%.
