[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Homeplus will hold a ‘Melon & Watermelon Festival’ at all stores nationwide starting from the 28th, offering discounts on melons and watermelons, the representative summer fruits, to stabilize food prices.
According to Homeplus on the 27th, the event was prepared to deliver watermelons, oriental melons, and other fruits shipped directly from fresh farms to customers while maintaining their freshness from the production area.
First, three types of melons are available: the sweet and juicy ‘Musk Melon,’ the elegant ‘Baekja Melon’ that resembles white porcelain and looks almost too beautiful to eat, and the ‘Baeksul Melon,’ which looks like it is covered in white snow. The Baekja Melon, shaped similarly to ancient Gaya pottery, is a hybrid of oriental melon and melon, characterized by the sweetness of melon and the unique crisp texture of oriental melon. The Baeksul Melon has a snow-white skin and white flesh, offering a soft texture and sweet juice.
Homeplus offers a 3,000 KRW discount to customers paying with any of 11 major cards, selling ▲Juicy Musk Melon for 12,990 KRW ▲Cloud-like Flesh Baekja Melon for 8,990 KRW ▲Snow-white Baeksul Melon for 9,990 KRW ▲Haman Baekja Melon for 12,990 KRW.
Unique watermelons are also available. These include the ‘Kkamang Honey Watermelon’ with a black exterior but bright red inside, the ‘Yellow Honey Watermelon’ that looks as if honey is brushed on its surface, and the small but densely filled ‘Mini Watermelon.’
Especially, the Yellow Honey Watermelon, introduced in limited quantities exclusively at Homeplus among the three major large marts this year, is a variety with a yellow rind like oriental melon and bright red flesh inside, featuring a thin rind, abundant flesh, and sweet aroma.
The Kkamang Honey Watermelon is characterized by its black rind with a hidden leopard pattern typical of watermelon rinds, making the pattern hard to see. It has higher sweetness and a crisp texture compared to regular watermelons, making it a product with high repurchase intention among customers.
These are also offered with a 3,000 KRW discount for customers paying with any of the 11 major cards: ▲100% Sweetness Selected Watermelon for 12,990 to 18,990 KRW ▲Kkamang Honey Watermelon for 19,990 to 23,990 KRW ▲Yellow Honey Watermelon for 25,990 to 29,990 KRW ▲Peel-and-Eat Apple Watermelon for 8,990 KRW.
Oriental melons are sold at half price during this event. Customers paying with any of the 11 major cards can purchase ‘Fresh Farm Oriental Melons’ prepared by farms in Seongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, where Homeplus’s fresh farms are located, at a 50% discount for 7,490 KRW.
Meanwhile, customers who purchase event products worth 30,000 KRW or more using any of the 11 event cards during the event period will receive a 3,000 KRW gift certificate.
Kim Cheolwoo, buyer of the Homeplus fruit team, said, “We are offering a variety of fresh and sweet fruits, including melons and watermelons, which are popular summer fruits. We plan to continue the ‘Price Stabilization Project,’ which provides abundant discount benefits to customers paying with any of the 11 major cards, to help lower food prices even during the family month when household expenses increase.”
