Had Upcoming First Trial on the 27th
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] Pyo Mo (70), a YouTuber who struck former Democratic Party leader Song Young-gil with a blunt weapon at a campaign site, died by suicide in a detention center.
On the 24th, the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office announced that Pyo was found to have taken his own life early that morning at the Seoul Southern Detention Center and was transported to a hospital but passed away. It is reported that the Southern District Prosecutors' Office, which has jurisdiction over the case, requested an autopsy warrant after an on-site examination by a prosecutor.
Pyo had been detained and indicted on charges of obstructing election freedom and special injury under the Public Official Election Act on the 1st and was scheduled for his first trial on the 27th.
The prosecution plans to notify the court of his death.
Pyo is accused of repeatedly striking former leader Song on the head with a blunt weapon on the afternoon of the 7th of last month at a square in front of Sinchon U-Plex in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, during an election campaign.
According to the prosecution, Pyo, who runs a YouTube channel, committed the crime because he viewed former leader Song's stance that "the South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises should be conducted as scheduled" as an obstacle to a declaration of the end of the war.
