[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Lee Jun-hyung] The labor authorities have conducted a search and seizure at the headquarters of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in connection with the death of a subcontractor worker.
The Busan Labor Office of the Ministry of Employment and Labor announced that from 9 a.m. on the 22nd, it has been conducting a search and seizure at the DSME headquarters located in Geoje, Gyeongnam, as well as at the offices of subcontractors.
Earlier, on the 25th of last month, a worker in his 50s belonging to a partner company at DSME died after being struck by a wire and a steel socket during tower crane maintenance work. The Ministry of Employment and Labor dispatched labor inspectors to the site that day, issued a work stoppage order, and investigated possible violations of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act and the Industrial Safety and Health Act.
Through the on-site investigation, the Ministry appears to have detected suspected legal violations by DSME and others. Both DSME and the subcontractors are workplaces with 50 or more regular employees, making them subject to the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
