Coupang Accelerates Introduction of Eco-Friendly Freight Vehicles... MOU with Ministry of Environment, Seoul City, and Others

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] Coupang has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Environment, Seoul Metropolitan Government, and the Korea Automobile Environment Association to promote the creation of an eco-friendly delivery ecosystem.

At the 'Eco-friendly Delivery Ecosystem Pilot Project MOU Signing Ceremony' held on the 31st, representatives from Coupang, the Ministry of Environment, Seoul Metropolitan Government, and the Korea Automobile Environment Association gathered to share their commitment.

This pilot project is being promoted to resolve difficulties in introducing eco-friendly freight vehicles due to insufficient electric vehicle charging solutions suitable for the distribution logistics delivery environment.

Coupang plans to participate in various initiatives to expand the introduction of electric freight vehicles in the distribution logistics sector. In particular, Coupang will take part in the Ministry of Environment's wireless charging pilot project to build electric freight vehicle charging infrastructure within its delivery center camp, leading the development of charging solutions and laying the groundwork for establishing an electric freight vehicle operation system.

Previously, Coupang has been striving to reduce air pollutant emissions by expanding eco-friendly delivery through deploying electric freight vehicles, hydrogen freight vehicles, and electric two-wheelers in its delivery operations.

Using large-scale logistics infrastructure built over several years and artificial intelligence (AI) technology to optimize delivery routes, Coupang is practicing reductions in energy consumption and carbon emissions. More than 80% of Rocket Delivery products are delivered without corrugated boxes or other unnecessary packaging, and for fresh food delivery, Coupang has introduced its self-developed reusable eco-bag called 'Fresh Bag.'

No Jae-guk, Head of Coupang's Logistics Policy Office, stated, "We expect that this MOU will enable a more effective establishment of an eco-friendly delivery foundation," adding, "We will do our best to provide an eco-friendly experience at every stage from order to delivery based on an end-to-end logistics network."
