The Fire Headquarters announced on the 1st that it will promote the "Mountain Accident Safety Measures" this month to prevent mountain safety accidents in spring and to enable rapid rescue activities.
According to the Fire Headquarters, a total of 1,139 mountain accidents occurred in Chungnam over the past three years, of which 260 cases (22.8%) were concentrated from March to May.
By type of reported mountain accidents, general distress accounted for 266 cases (23.4%), the highest, followed by slips and falls with 215 cases (18.9%), personal illness with 103 cases (9%), and exhaustion and dehydration with 85 cases (5.3%).
The Fire Headquarters is promoting safety measures considering the mountain accidents that concentrate in spring and the types of accidents that mainly occur.
First, they plan to select hiking trails that have had many accidents so far and operate mountain safety keepers at the trail entrances, inspect and maintain 2,577 safety facilities installed on major hiking trails, and cooperate with local governments to reinforce safety facilities such as railings in areas with frequent mountain accidents.
They will also strengthen emergency rescue capabilities for mountain accidents by operating the 119 on-site support mobile system and utilizing drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras.
Starting this year, they will also place mountain safety maps in simple rescue first aid kits on major hiking trails and attach QR codes so that hikers can easily check safety information.
Choi Jang-il, Head of Rescue and First Aid Division, said, "To prevent mountain accidents, it is necessary to fully understand the hiking course and use designated trails," and added, "We ask hikers to pay attention to sufficient stretching and clothing to maintain body temperature before climbing the mountain."
