[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-seop] International pressure is mounting on Belarus for aiding Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

On the 2nd, major foreign media outlets reported, citing a senior EU official, that diplomats from the European Union (EU) have approved new sanctions against Belarus. Another official explained that the measure aims to prevent the export of not only the existing sanctioned items but also any additional products to the EU. There are also prospects that Belarusian banks will be cut off from the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) payment network.

Earlier, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced sanctions against Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who supported Russia's extensive military operations in Ukraine. President von der Leyen emphasized, "We will hit the Lukashenko regime with a new sanctions package," adding, "We will introduce sanctions that block exports of products ranging from mineral fuels to tobacco, wood, cement, steel, and dual-use military and civilian products."
