[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Hyundai Energy Solutions is embarking on the development of ultra-high-efficiency heterojunction (HJT) solar photovoltaic technology products. The company plans to accelerate its lead in the next-generation market.

On the 8th, Hyundai Energy Solutions announced that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Jusung Engineering for the development of ultra-high-efficiency HJT solar products. The signing ceremony was attended by Park Jonghwan, CEO of Hyundai Energy Solutions, and Hwang Cheolju, CEO of Jusung Engineering, among others.

The two companies will collaborate on the development of prototypes for large-area (M10 class) HJT cells and modules, reliability verification, and the exchange of manufacturing processes and production technologies for mass production. Hyundai Energy Solutions stated that the goal of this HJT product is to increase cell efficiency by more than 2% compared to existing products and to raise module efficiency from the current 21% to over 23%.

Hyundai Energy Solutions will leverage its 15 years of accumulated know-how in high-efficiency cell production technology to develop modular processes and conduct reliability verification. Jusung Engineering will be responsible for enhancing the quality of key processes including uniformity, as well as cell enlargement and equipment development. Jusung Engineering is a company with advanced technological capabilities in the semiconductor and solar photovoltaic fields. Last month, it received certification from the Korea Institute of Energy Research for world-class HJT efficiency.

According to Hyundai Energy Solutions, using HJT products minimizes surface energy loss during photoelectric conversion, maximizing efficiency. Over the past decade, many companies and research institutions have struggled to develop cost-competitive large-area HJT products. HJT technology is attracting attention because of its high compatibility with 'tandem' ultra-high-efficiency solar technology, which exceeds the 30% cell efficiency limit of commercial silicon photovoltaics.

Hyundai Energy Solutions plans to enhance its market competitiveness by pursuing a mid- to long-term plan for the joint development of HJT and tandem technologies. A Hyundai Energy Solutions official said, "Until tandem technology is commercialized, HJT will lead the market as cutting-edge technology. We started development aiming for a 2025 launch and will accelerate efforts to capture the solar market with ultra-high-efficiency HJT products."
