[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Ju-hyung] It has been revealed that a wanted fraud suspect who collapsed after being shocked with a taser while resisting police arrest eventually died after falling into a coma.
According to 'Yonhap News' on the 4th, Mr. A (48), an A-level wanted fraud suspect, died on the afternoon of the 2nd while receiving treatment at a hospital.
Earlier, two officers including Corporal B from a police substation under the Osan Police Station in Gyeonggi Province responded to a disturbance report around 11 p.m. on the 28th of last month and went to a nearby motel. Corporal B and others conducted an identity check on the reported individual, Mr. A, at the scene, confirming that Mr. A was an A-level wanted suspect (with an arrest or detention warrant issued) on fraud charges.
Subsequently, Corporal B and others attempted to arrest Mr. A, but he fiercely resisted by pushing them. Even after being handcuffed with his hands in front, Mr. A continued to resist, and just before boarding the patrol car, he pushed Corporal B, returned to the motel, and threatened by raising a fire extinguisher in the lobby as if to strike.
In this situation, Corporal B used the stun function of the taser he was carrying (applying the device without cartridges to deliver an electric shock to the body) on Mr. A's body parts.
However, Mr. A continued to threaten by kicking, so Corporal B used the stun function again on Mr. A's thigh.
Afterward, Corporal B laid Mr. A down and attempted to restrain him. When Mr. A stopped moving, he called 119 (emergency services).
Mr. A was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment but did not regain consciousness. Ultimately, he passed away on the 2nd.
The police plan to request an autopsy from the National Forensic Service on Mr. A's body to investigate the exact cause of death. They are also reviewing the entire restraint process carried out by the responding officers.
