"Production and Sales Rights Also Generously Transferred" ... Gyeongbuk Agricultural Research Institute Transfers New Variety 'Geumbit Daemyeong' to Farmers On the 25th, the Gyeongbuk Agricultural Technology Institute transferred the exclusive license for the new peach variety Geumbit Daemyeong to six local seedling companies.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] On the 25th, the Gyeongbuk Agricultural Technology Institute transferred the exclusive license for the new peach variety ‘Geumbit Daemyeong’ to six local seedling companies and agreed to mutually cooperate to expand the distribution of the variety.

Geumbit Daemyeong is the first mid-late season yellow peach variety developed by the Cheongdo Peach Research Institute and was registered for variety protection with the National Seed Management Office last year.

The Gyeongbuk Agricultural Technology Institute introduced it as a high-sugar, large-fruit variety with a mid-August ripening period, an average fruit weight of 450g, and a sugar content of over 14 Brix. The stored product has excellent shelf life and does not easily soften.

When ripened post-harvest, it offers abundant juice as well as a sweet aroma and taste. The fruit quality characteristics are excellent, and its attractive appearance makes it promising for export to Southeast Asia.

The transfer of the exclusive license (통상실시권) means that the holder of the variety protection rights transfers the rights to produce and sell the developed variety to seedling companies or agricultural organizations. Gyeongsangbuk-do has transferred the production and sales rights of Geumbit Daemyeong to six local companies.

The planned quantity for sale under the exclusive license is 50,800 seedlings covering 169 hectares. Starting with 4,800 seedlings in 2022, a total of 50,800 seedlings will be distributed over seven years until 2028.

The contracted seedling companies are Pungjin Production Farm in Gyeongju, Samsung Farm in Gyeongsan, Gyeongbok Breeding Farm, Dongbaek Farm, Jikji Farm in Gimcheon, and Geumneung Farm. From this year, Geumbit Daemyeong will be distributed to cultivating farms.

The Cheongdo Peach Research Institute has developed 14 varieties so far, including 10 registered for variety protection and 4 pending applications, aiming to cultivate high-quality peach varieties that meet consumer preferences to revitalize both domestic and export markets. They have distributed about 320,000 seedlings covering 1,074 hectares of 9 varieties to farms.

Shin Yongseup, Director of the Agricultural Technology Institute, said, “The development of new peach varieties by the research institute will enhance the recognition of regional brands and positively impact farmers’ income.” He added, “We will continue to develop delicious peaches that satisfy both producers and consumers.”
