[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] Among the crimes that occurred in the third quarter of this year, fraud crimes threatening the "common people's economy" were the most frequent. This is according to the quarterly crime statistics released by the police for the first time.

According to the "2021 3rd Quarter Crime Occurrence and Arrest Status" released by the National Police Agency on the 14th, a total of 370,089 crimes occurred, with 299,312 cases (80.9%) resulting in arrests. Among these, excluding special law crimes, fraud crimes under the Criminal Act were the highest at 76,396 cases.

Following were theft with 43,804 cases, assault with 30,728 cases, property damage with 14,478 cases, and embezzlement with 13,293 cases. Fraud and theft cases threatening the common people's economy accounted for nearly one-third of all crimes. There were a total of 6,355 violent crimes such as murder, robbery, rape, and arson, with sex crimes including rape and sexual assault reaching 5,774 cases.

The National Police Agency plans to disclose crime occurrence and arrest status quarterly on its website going forward. The release of these periodic statistics was made in response to opinions that the annual "Police Crime Statistics" report was insufficient for quickly grasping the latest crime trends.

The periodic statistics include the number of crimes, arrests, and arrested individuals by crime type and by metropolitan/provincial police agency. The third quarter statistics were released this month, and thereafter, PDF files will be posted on the website in early January, April, July, and October each year. The quarterly statistics differ in some classifications and may be supplemented compared to the annual crime statistics, so the police explained that direct comparison with annual statistics is difficult.
